Learn More About Our Pediatric Speech, Occupational & Physical Therapy

  • What Conditions Can Pediatric Occupational Therapy Address?

Pediatric occupational therapy can help children of all ages who experience challenges with everyday activities due to physical, sensory, or cognitive limitations. These limitations may arise from developmental delays, autism, cerebral palsy, sensory processing disorder, or injuries.

Our occupational therapists work with children to improve their fine motor skills, such as handwriting, feeding, dressing and grasping objects. We can also address challenges with visual-motor and perception skills. Additionally, we can help children who struggle with sensory processing issues, which can impact their ability to participate in daily routines.

If you have questions about whether pediatric occupational therapy could benefit your child, please contact us to schedule a consultation.

  • How Does Occupational Therapy Via Teletherapy Differ From In-Person Sessions?

Teletherapy allows your child to receive treatment from our expert occupational therapists (OTs) from your own home. This is convenient for busy families and helps children feel more comfortable. It also allows children to use their own toys and self-care items during treatment.

We utilize a parent-coaching model for most sessions where you can actively engage in your child’s sessions. We provide education to help you apply the strategies learned during therapy in your child’s daily life. This helps your child achieve better long-term outcomes.

Teletherapy can be effective for many conditions, but we will defer to in-person treatment for more complex conditions that require specialized equipment. Our OTs will work with you to determine if teletherapy is appropriate for your child. We can discuss their specific needs and goals to ensure you receive the most effective treatment plan.

  • How Can I Support My Child’s Occupational Therapy Progress At Home?

We understand the importance of continuing your child's occupational therapy progress outside of our sessions. Here are some tips.

    • Practice at home: Ask your child's occupational therapist for specific activities or exercises to practice at home. Consistency is key!
    • Incorporate therapy into daily routines: Look for opportunities to integrate therapeutic activities into everyday tasks like dressing, bathing, or meal prep.
    • Make it fun and engaging: Use games, songs, or rewards to make the exercises more enjoyable for your child.
    • Communicate with the therapist: Keep your therapist updated on your child's progress. This allows for adjustments and ensures you're on the same page.
    • Create a supportive environment: Modify your home environment to meet your child's specific needs, as recommended by the therapist.

Don't hesitate to reach out to ask any questions you may have.

  • How Does Speech Teletherapy Work?

Speech teletherapy is done through videoconferencing to deliver speech therapy services remotely. Your child can participate from home using a computer, tablet, or smartphone with a webcam and an internet connection.

During a teletherapy session, your child will connect with a licensed speech-language pathologist (SLP) who will conduct an evaluation, create a treatment plan, and guide them through exercises to improve speech and language skills. We encourage parents to participate in sessions so that we can coach you on how to help your child practice between sessions for the best results.

Teletherapy can treat a variety of communication disorders, including:

    • Articulation difficulties
    • Language delays
    • Fluency problems
    • Voice disorders

If you are interested in learning more about whether teletherapy speech therapy is right for your child, please contact us to schedule a consultation.

  • How Can I Help My Child Practice Speech Therapy Techniques At Home?

Consistent practice is the key to your child's speech development. Here are some tips to support your child's progress at home:

    • Incorporate speech exercises into everyday activities like playing games, singing songs, or reading books together. This keeps your child engaged and motivated.
    • Celebrate your child's efforts and improvements, no matter how small. Positive reinforcement encourages them to practice.
    • Break down practice sessions into shorter, more manageable chunks throughout the day. This helps maintain focus and prevents frustration.
    • Use flashcards, pictures, or mirrors to help your child visualize correct mouth movements and sound production.

Progress takes time. Be patient with your child and consistent with practicing the techniques recommended by their speech therapist.

  • Are There Specific Activities Or Tools Used In Teletherapy Speech Sessions?

Speech teletherapy uses a range of activities to deliver effective remote care. Therapists may use:

    • Interactive games and exercises: These can target specific speech sounds, vocabulary development, or social communication skills in a fun and engaging way.
    • Virtual whiteboards and screen sharing: These tools allow therapists to share visuals, written prompts, and activities with you or your child during the session

The specific activities and tools used will depend on your child’s needs and goals for therapy. During a consultation, you can discuss what tools and activities might be used with their therapist.

We also encourage parents to be active participants in their child’s teletherapy sessions, so you will be able to learn the techniques that we use and apply them in daily life outside of therapy sessions to help your child continue practicing their speech skills.

  • How Can I Support My Child’s Physical Therapy Progress At Home?

We understand the importance of continued progress in your child's physical therapy journey. Here are some ways to support them between clinic visits:

    • Practice prescribed exercises: Consistent practice is crucial. Ask their therapist about incorporating exercises into daily routines or playtime.
    • Create a safe environment: Clear any obstacles and ensure proper support for activities like standing or walking.
    • Positive reinforcement: Celebrate your child's efforts and milestones, big or small. Encouragement always helps!
    • Communication: Keep their therapist informed of any changes you observe at home. This helps tailor the program for optimal results.
    • Incorporate therapy into play: Find fun ways to integrate exercises into playtime. This makes therapy sessions more enjoyable.

Remember, we're here to partner with you. If you have questions or concerns, contact our clinic.

  • How Do You Assess A Child’s Needs For Physical Therapy Through Teletherapy?

While we can't conduct a full physical evaluation through teletherapy, a physical therapist can assess a child's needs through a video consultation. This assessment will involve:

    • A detailed discussion: The therapist will discuss your child's medical history, symptoms, and daily routines.
    • Observation: The therapist will observe your child's movement during the video call, such as how they sit, stand, and walk.
    • Questions and activities: The therapist may ask you to guide your child through simple movements or activities to assess their range of motion, strength, and coordination.

Based on this assessment, the therapist can determine if your child would benefit from physical therapy and can provide guidance on the next steps. Contact us to learn more.

  • What Are The Benefits Of Physical Therapy For Children With Motor Skill Delays?

Physical therapy can significantly improve children's motor skill delays. WBT Therapy Works' qualified therapists create personalized plans to help children achieve developmental milestones.

Through fun and engaging exercises, physical therapy can:

    • Enhance a child's gross motor skills, which are used for larger movements like walking, running, and jumping.
    • Improve fine motor skills, essential for grasping objects, writing, and dressing.
    • Increase coordination and balance, promoting participation in everyday activities and play.
    • Strengthen muscles, improve posture and reduce pain.
    • Boost confidence and independence, allowing children to participate more fully in life.

  • What Is Teletherapy, And How Does It Work?

Teletherapy is pediatric therapy delivered through remote video calls. It allows you and your child to connect with a licensed therapist from the comfort of your own home.

Just like with in-person therapy, you'll discuss your goals and concerns with the therapist, who will develop a treatment plan tailored to your child’s needs.

Teletherapy is effective in treating many conditions with good support from the caregiver or parent.

We use a coaching model that gives you the advantage of being an active participant during your child’s sessions. You’ll learn how to apply therapy strategies outside of sessions, which can help your child achieve the best long-term outcomes.

For younger children, we use toys found in your home to practice key developmental skills. For older children, we also use online interactive games.
